New England Lighthouse Adventures

A trip to the coast of Maine is not complete without a visit to a lighthouse (or two!) On our recent jaunt to Portland, a stop at Portland Head Light was at the top of our must-see list. The morning was chilly, the views were stunning and the opportunity to wear my wool poncho for the first time was like icing on the cake!

Portland Head Light sits on the corner of Cape Elizabeth, just 20 minutes south of Portland. This historic lighthouse has been a guiding light for sailor’s voyages since the late 1700s!

Guests can visit the park surrounding the lighthouse and even pay a $2 charitable donation for a pop into the little museum inside the house.

Patrick and I can never resist a good bit of history with a scenic view included!

We wandered the property and imagined what life was like long ago, when the lighthouse was inhabited by just the keeper and his family.

A lonely lifestyle for sure, but a beautiful one!

In addition to the lighthouse, there are acres upon acres of park to explore. We walked a bit along the trail above, looking out at the ocean and revelling in the fall foliage.

If things couldn’t get any more picture perfect, we then stumbled upon an actual lighthouse painter! This adorable old man offers his oil paintings of Maine to the many tourists flocking to Portland Head Light.

A lover of kitschy souvenirs, I couldn’t resist a postcard of one of his paintings, and a snap of the artist too!

Baby girl Kerley had an absolute blast! How do I know, you might ask? I somehow had the energy to explore all morning long without needing a break. Ahhh the benefits of traveling while in your second trimester!

With the weather changing from sunny to gloomy to sunny to a bit rainy, my Hunter boots were the perfect solution.

Paired with this reversible wool cape from J. McLaughlin, I was ready for whatever the beautiful New England day might bring.

While I still have quite a few big chunks of travel photos to share with you all. I’m just going to sit back and enjoy spacing them out. After all, these photos are perhaps the only fall foliage eye candy I’m going to see for the rest of the season! Houston doesn’t get too much of that down here. 😉

As always, thanks for stopping by the blog! Stay tuned for the rest of our stay in Portland and our trip to Kennebunkport!
