Walking in Memphis

My husband was away for a beach bachelor weekend with his college buddies. While the guys were having their fun, I took this opportunity to head up to Memphis, see family, and visit old friends.

It’s always nice going back to your home town for a visit, and a bit surreal.  I forgot what it was like to run into people that I know out and about!  Being so new to Houston (and it being such a HUGE city) I hardly ever run into anyone and it’s actually kind of liberating, in a weird way.

Anyway.  On to the fun.  I spent the day with my some of my favorite people.  Brunch with the family.  Zoo day with my girlfriends.  And what I really want to share with you all: drinks with friends in an old abandoned brewery turned beer garden.

So this brewery, they are calling it the Tennessee Brewery Untapped.   Untapped due to its plethora of “untapped” potential.  The brewery is currently slated for a recking ball sometime this summer.  Memphians are banding together to save the building by showing the public the many things this historic space has to offer.
This building is about a block from where my parents live in downtown Memphis.  Its an absolutely gorgeous structure and there are so many different things that this space could be used for.  I mean, can you imagine how fabulous a wedding reception would be in here?!  I’m so glad that I could contribute to saving this space by sipping on beers with friends and marveling at the beautiful urban decay.

My lovely friend Carey and I.  We hadn’t seen each other since Christmas, so this was a fun reunion.
As if this place wasn’t amazing enough, they happened to be serving my favorite beer, Abita Strawberry.  If you haven’t tried it, I dare you too.  It’s a sign of summertime’s arrival when this seasonal brew hits the shelves.  I kind of geek out a bit over it.

    Hi, Sarah!
A couple of food trucks were tucked away in the back of the beer garden.  This one served up some mean tacos that may just give the tacos back in Texas a run for their money.

Now I can’t just end this post without sharing some outfit photos with you.   Sarah and I had some fun snapping these on our walk to the brewery.

If you live in Memphis, check this place out, sip on a beer, & help save the brewery.   Hoping that the Tennessee Brewery is still around by my next visit!

    The Best of the Met

I always love seeing what the stars wear to the Met Gala.   Their fashion choices are always a bit riskier and more fun than the typical awards season style.  Ball gowns also happen to be my favorite, and I love seeing them on display here in new ways each year.
Here are my favorites from the 2014 Met Gala:
    Allison Williams Met Gala 2014

    Taylor Swift Met Gala 2014

    Claire Danes Met Gala 2014

Makes me just wish that I too could slip into one of these luxe gowns and dance the night away… day!

    Chutney Cheese Ball Recipe

You guys.  I am about to share my most favorite party food recipe with you.
Growing up, every time my mom would attend any event that required bringing food, she would make a Chutney Cheese Ball.   I was always allowed just one sample before she left the house, and in the off chance that I was actually invited to the party, I’m pretty sure this was the only thing that I would eat.

One of our neighbors was hosting a block party last night, celebrating the new house that they are having built across the street.  It was so much fun to get out and meet some of our neighbors and I was also excited to make one of my favorite recipes to share.

    You’ll Need:
-half a bag of finely shredded cheddar cheese
    -block of cream cheese
-real bacon crumbles (usually I like to cook my own bacon and shred it up, but these were on hand and much quicker)
    -1/3 of sliced green onions
-Major Grey’s Chutney (sold at Kroger usually found near the hot sauce…you must use THIS flavor/brand its definitely more savory than sweet chutneys)
    -crackers to serve
Mix the cream cheese and cheddar cheese in a bowl and roll into a ball.   Chill in the fridge for about 15-20 minutes.
Slice (or cut) your green onions.   I usually would use a little bit more than pictured here, but we are growing our own and this was all that happened to be on hand at the time.
Pour on the chutney!  (I tend to use about 3/4 of the bottle)

    And add your toppings!

    An Easter Brunch

On Easter Sunday my husband and I got together with our favorite (and also new to Texas) friends and had ourselves a potluck Easter brunch.   Since we all just moved here, none of us had family close by to celebrate the holiday with, so we took this opportunity to have our own big Easter celebration together.  The weather was perfect, and so was the food!
Here we are in our Easter finery.  Before Brunch, we all went to Easter mass at a the church nearby in our neighborhood.  Next year I’m sure we will take note, and not arrive only 15 minutes before!   We definitely spent the entire time standing in the back.  Lesson learned.

    Now onto the brunch:

Okay…. I went kind of all out setting the table.  Needless to say I had a whole lot of fun playing hostess.  🙂

The tablecloth that I used is from the Target Threshold line.   They always have the cutest stuff! And to make it even better, it was a really great price.  Below is the much pricier Anthro version that looks pretty similar.

Also, those blue metal chairs? On sale for less than $10! Target you are too good to me.
We used an antique teacart as our bloody mary and mimosa bar.  Usually the teacart just sits out on the patio, housing a few plants and odds and ends.  I’m thinking about repainting it …. just not sure which color yet.

Doesn’t all the food just look divine? Well, it certainly was!   We contributed the ham, potatoes, and salad.  Oh and I found the cheesy potato recipe on pinterest.  I made them with leeks and topped the potatoes off with gruyere cheese.  Highly recommend!   We all had leftovers for days, which I may or may not still be munching on at this very moment.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and that you were able to spend the day with family and friends!  We are so blessed to have met so many great people in Texas and that we were able to share the day with them.

Summertime Soiree Style from the Brits

I was recently introduced to the British clothing line Boden.  Boden is kind of like the UK version of J. Crew.  How I have gone so long without shopping here, I do not know.
Their pieces are classic and can be worn for years without truly ever going out of style.  Plus, Duchess Katherine is a fan…and she can do no wrong, am I right? These pretty pictures just have me itching to don a sundress and head to Wimbledon or a Royal Regatta with my girls.  But really any garden party would do. 😉
