    A Fashion Brunch & A Floral Dress

It’s shaping up to be a big week for me! I started an exciting new job on Monday and I’m only working a few more days until we jet out for the holiday weekend to see some good friends of ours get married.   This summer is just flying right on by.
But to pause it for a moment, here’s a bit of this and that from Sunday’s brunch.
This past weekend, my friend Anna and I went to a fashion show and brunch hosted by Tidbits Houston.

We were treated with a delicious brunch menu and an informal fashion show featuring the latest styles from Cakewalk Style, a boutique here in Houston.

Our scrumptious brunch was at Trenza, which is a new restaurant that just opened in the Upper Kirby area.   The restaurant describes its flavors as “Latin dishes with an Indian flair.”

If you couldn’t tell already, one of my absolute favorite things about living in Houston is all of the FOOD here!  Hands down, the best restaurants that I have ever been to are in this city.   Each time we go out to eat is an adventure in itself.  Having such high expectations of the restaurants in town, Trenza’s brunch did not disappoint.
Anna and I started our foray into brunch with the obvious choice of go-to brunch cocktails: Mimosas.

Trenza took a little spin on the traditional OJ mimosa, and we tried interesting flavors such as peach, cucumber melon, and pomegranate.
I’m still not sure which my favorite was!
But they were definitely a welcome change from your regular OJ ones.

Okay.. I think I’ll actually have to settle with my favorite being the cucumber melon. ๐Ÿ™‚

After scouring our menu and going back and forth between all of the delightful sounding options, we finally both decided on the the Egg & Chorizo Breakfast Tacos.

We shared sides of Cheddar Cheese Grits and Jalapeรฑo Scalloped Potatoes.   The sides are not pictured because they may have been too tasty for me to even think about pausing for a photo.  ๐Ÿ˜‰
While sipping on our drinks and enjoying the delicious menu, we watched as several models waltzed in between all of the tables, stopping to chat every once in a while to discuss the pieces that they were wearing.
Here is a bit of what they wore:
    ShopStyle
Crop Top and Skirt // Tibi

    Presmar Clutch here & here

We weren’t treated to just beautiful clothes, these Presmar clutches were also on display.   I can not tell you how soft the leather felt on these beauties.  If anything was going to come home with me from the style show, it would have been one of these.  Especially that pink one!

And now on to a bit of what I wore.

Annona Midi Dress  //  Envelope Clutch (similar and on sale!) // Seychelles Thyme Wedges

I snapped these photos before I walked out the door, and before the Houston humidity could catch up with me.

I absolutely love this lightweight summer sundress, and it is such a great length.  You don’t see tea length dresses too often, and they are a nice alternative to maxi dress.  I’d say this is a perfect dress to wear to a garden wedding or you know .. to Sunday brunch!

After brunch, Anna and I hopped across the street to browse Tootsies.  Tootsies is kind of like the Houston equivalent to Barneys or Bloomingdales.
We oohed and ahhed over every single thing in the store, imagining what it would be like to take home one of their stunning designer dresses! But for now, we are happy to settle with good old fashioned window shopping.

How to Chalk Paint & A Hand Me Down Dresser

I had meant to post this months and months ago … but it has taken me forever to get around to shooting the after photo.  ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Better late than never!
Quite a few years ago, well more than that, in college actually, Patrick lived in a run down (to put it nicely) house with five other guys.  They called it the Lacrosse House.  He and all of his friends who lived there were on the team and the house was the location of many great college parties.  Patrick and I first met there actually.
The house was always passed down from the older guys to the younger players.  When it was Patrick’s turn to move in, somebody had left this huge dresser behind in his new bedroom.   Its a beast of thing, so I can understand why nobody wanted to fool with moving it out.
Flash forward to now, and this hand me down dresser currently resides in our master bedroom.
It is a great piece, very sturdy, and has lots of drawers, which is a plus, but it just doesn’t look very… what should I say… contemporary?

Well, we finally found the time to repaint this beast.

I chose Behr’s Creek Bend, from Home Depot.   I didn’t want to bother with sanding the entire piece down so I decided it was best to chalk paint it.

Chalk paint is the EASIEST and most effortless way to paint a piece of furniture.  It requires absolutely no sanding and usually only needs one or maybe two coats of paint at the most.   Plus, it dries very quickly.

I’m sure you’ve heard of Annie Sloan chalk paint?  Well…her paint is about $30 for a quart.  You can easily make your own quart of chalk paint for around $5-$7 or so.

Now on to the How To:
DIY Chalk Paint, Do it Yourself Chalk Paint, Chalk Paint, How to Chalk Paint, Make Your Own Chalk Paint
    You will need:

1/3 cup of Plaster of Paris
    1/3 cup of Water
    1 cup of Paint
    Stir Stick
    Mixing Bucket

Plaster of Paris is the stuff that people use to make sculptures or castes of things.  Its chalky and thick like flour, which is what will give your paint that chalk paint look.
Once you buy the plaster of paris, you can continue to make your own chalk paint later on for around $2-$3, since you’ll have everything else on hand.   I always buy just a sample of paint (which is usually around 1 cup) from Lowe’s or Home Depot.  Seriously.  So cheap and easy!

For this dresser, I doubled the recipe.  It is a pretty big dresser after all.

After leaving the dresser out all day to dry, it was time to apply the poly to seal the paint to finish it off.
Then … we brought it inside!
    Ta Da!

I decided to leave the drawer pulls’ original bronzy/gold color.  I thought the gold tones would match the antique mirror that I have sitting on top of the dresser.

DIY Chalk Paint, Do it Yourself Chalk Paint, Chalk Paint, How to Chalk Paint, Make Your Own Chalk Paint, Chalk Paint Dresser, Grey Dresser,
I can’t believe it took us a year of having this dresser in our house to finally get around to painting it.   I am so glad that we did! I am absolutely in love with the way that it looks now.
Like I was saying earlier…we did this project MONTHS ago.  Finally getting around to posting it has given me the itch to tackle even more DIY projects.
With that, I’m headed to Lowe’s to pick up some more paint and get started on some random projects around the house.
That is what Saturdays are for, after all.

    Wanderlust in Full Effect

Sorry for my lack of posts lately.  My mind has been elsewhere.  In three and a half short weeks, Patrick and I will be in Florida with family for a long (and much needed) relaxing week of beach sitting & sunshine.

And all I can think about is our upcoming trip!

Patrick and I even went to the bookstore the other day to pick up some beach reads.  And being the book nerd that I am, I have already finished my book, much too far in advance of our planned vacation.    (BTW The American Heiress: A Novelis an amazing read!)

With my mind fully preoccupied on our upcoming trip, I’m sharing some beachy outfit inspiration from pinterest with you today, and how you can get these looks for yourself.

    A Tennessee Wedding

This past weekend, Patrick and I travelled to Franklin, Tennessee to see two lovely college friends of ours say “I do.”
The wedding perfectly reflected the couple and was every bit as southern and charming as the bride and groom.  Hands down one of the best and most beautiful weddings that I have ever been to.  Thanks for throwing a great party, Patty and Mel!

    Can you believe this backdrop!?

Their ceremony was filled with so much personality.  The groom walked down the aisle to “Rocky Top” and the ring bearer carried the rings up in an old lacrosse stick.  The string quartet that was nestled in the corner even played “Call Me Maybe” at one point! So fun.

Patrick and the groom both played lacrosse together in college.   Lucky for me, a good portion of my college girl friends ended up dating Patrick’s “Lacrosse House” roommates.   Needless to say, it was a fun reunion for the both of us!

My friend Christen and I were rocking our fancy maxi dresses, while just pretending to be modern day Scarlett O’Haras.
Okay not really.   But it did sort of feel like we could have been attending a 21st century party at Twelve Oaks Plantation….Gone With the Wind reference anyone?

    Tennessee, you sure are pretty!

It was sad to leave all of our good friends and fly back to Texas, when not long ago we were living such a short distance away.  However, there will be many more weddings and reunions soon enough.  And this gorgeous sunset definitely made the plane ride home much more bearable.
I can’t complete this blog post without talking about all of these girls pretty dresses, now can I?

I loved how bright and colorful all of our party dresses were and I am especially loving these printed maxi dresses!  Weddings are the perfect excuse to pull out that dress that you can’t possibly where any where else and have fun with it.

I purchased the green dress that I’m wearing from Anthro a few months ago.  It’s been hiding in the back of my closet all of this time, waiting to be worn.  The Vernalis Maxi Dress is on sale at the moment but it looks like it may be sold out online.

Here is a bit of summer time wedding guest style inspiration….as well as where you can get those pretty ones that my friends are stunning in.

Tuscany, Austin, & A Red Dress

I wanted to make the most out of our last day in Austin, so we squeezed in a bit of sightseeing Sunday morning.  Then Patrick and I hit the road to head back to Houston, but not before we made sure to stop in a small little Texas town for quite possibly the best lunch the two of us will ever have.
More on that in a bit.
But first, we had coffee in Tuscany.
Austin TX, Tuscany at 360, Austin Java,
Julie had to catch a flight before the sun came up.  So she told us a few places that we had to visit before we left town. One being her favorite coffee shop, Austin Java, which just so happened to also be inside of a gas station that looked and felt like you were deep in the rolling hills of Tuscany.

The scenery in this town is ridiculously stunning.  Patrick and I had the patio to ourselves and while we admired the view.  He sipped on a regular cafe au lait and I ordered a syrupy espresso drink filled with milk, honey, and hazelnut.   Sometimes you just have to treat yourself to the most sugary of speciality coffee drinks.

After coffee, we headed closer to downtown for even more coffee and some breakfast on South Congress Street.  This part of Austin is riddled with restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and antique stores.
Jo's Coffee, Jo's Coffee Austin, Jo's Coffee Austin Texas, South Congress Street

First stop was Jo’s Coffee.  We didn’t know where to go for breakfast so we decided that whichever restaurant looked the most crowded, we’d try it.  Which is funny because I feel like most of the time people act the opposite.  In my opinion though, crowded means the food is going to to taste really good!
Luckily Patrick and I made it to Jo’s before the “No Breakfast Tacos” sign was lit.   We both tried the Migas Breakfast Tacos and they did not disappoint.
Six months ago, I’d never even had a breakfast taco and now they are something that I eat on a weekly basis.  Another pro to this new life in Texas!
If you’re ever in Austin and you stop at Jo’s, be sure to get a picture by their “I Love You So Much” sign on the side of the building.  Its a fun little photo op spot that people we’re lining up to take their pictures in front of.
I think I may have to frame this one.  Thank you to the nice old man who took this for us!
Before we go any further, let me tell you about this “red” dress that I’m wearing.

For some reason Anthropologie is saying that it’s orange.  But its RED!  I promise.  Or I may be just a bit colorblind.  The picture online doesn’t really do it justice.  I saw it in the store and before I even tried it on I knew that it would be a staple in my closet for years and years.
Trendy in Texas, Trendy in Texas Blog, Tangelo Dress, Tangelo Dress Blog, Tangelo Dress Anthropologie
This dress is polyester so I feel like it is a perfect dress for summer, it’s lightweight and breathes easily. And I love the classic shape it has to it, this dress could have easily been worn by Hailey Mills on The Parent Trap or Betty Draper in Mad Men.  Gotta love Mad Men.  But there is a cut out on the back gives it a fresher more modern feel.
The necklace that I’m wearing was purchased from GroopDealz but it looks like they’re now sold out, sad.  Amazon has an identical one for under $18.99!  And compared to the $150 price tag of the J. Crew lookalike version of this necklace…it’s practically a steal!

Now back to our morning on South Congress:
Uncommon Objects, Uncommon Objects Austin, Uncommon Objects South Congress Street,
There are tons and tons of shops in this area.  Uncommon Objects had to be my favorite of them all.
I have this not so secret dream to follow in my mom’s footsteps and have my own antique booth one day.  I was dragged all over the South as a kid, going in and out of antique shops, estate sales, and even some junk yards with my mom.  It wasn’t until college that I actually started appreciating (and loving) antiques.
This shop was so fun because each booth had a different color scheme to it.  Plus it was filled with THE most random of random things.  I guess that is why they call it Uncommon Objects, after all.
Uncommon Objects, Uncommon Objects Austin, Uncommon Objects South Congress Street,
Uncommon Objects, Uncommon Objects Austin, Uncommon Objects South Congress Street,
Uncommon Objects, Uncommon Objects Austin, Uncommon Objects South Congress Street,
We walked in an out of every store on the street and passed some cactus plants along the way.  I always have to do a double take when seeing cactuses or palm trees.  I’m still not used to living this far south!
One of the last shops we stopped in had the most precious of pillows that I’ve ever laid my eyes on.  Did the makers of this pillow come into my home and take this photo of my dog, Lily?  Because it looks exactly like her.
After having our fill of all the shops on South Congress we were ready to hit the road in search for somewhere good to stop for lunch on the way home.
But it seems that this post is starting to get a little too long for its own good, so I’m going to have to share that for another time.
    Thanks for reading! ๐Ÿ™‚
