Froberg’s Farms: Must Go Place for Strawberry Picking in Houston
These days I’m finding it harder and harder to keep my tot entertained at home. We’ve been making a point to get out and explore Houston on the weekends and Wednesdays (Annie’s off-day) each week. With so many family-friendly activities in this city, it’s an easy feat to fill our days with adventure. A few friends of mine recommended a strawberry picking activity for the kiddos at Froberg’s Farms and we jumped at the chance. Just yesterday, Annie and I met my sweet friend Rebekah and her two kiddos for an afternoon on the farm.
Sharing a peek into our “berry” beautiful afternoon and a few details to know about when planning your own strawberry picking adventure in Houston, below!
Froberg’s Farm and Country Store sits just south of Houston and is about a half hour drive from the city center. Once here, you feel like you’re a world away nestled deep in the countryside. Froberg’s offers seasonal activities for the whole family to enjoy. From spring strawberry picking to cutting your own zinnia flowers in August to a pumpkin patch in the fall – there’s always something going on here. The country store offers an array of fresh locally grown produce year-round and even boasts a delicious bakery too!
Know Before You Go Strawberry Picking at Froberg’s Farms
Strawberry picking kicked off on April 1st of this year. We visited on the 3rd and the fields were absolutely full of bright red juicy strawberries just waiting to be snatched up. Visitors can buy a plastic bucket for $1.25 and fill them to their heart’s desire. When weighed, strawberries are $3 a pound and a full to the top bucket holds just about five pounds. Be sure to bring cash with you, as there is a minimum $5 charge for our all credit cards. You have to buy your empty buckets before you head out to the fields and then pay for your strawberries as soon as you return.
Another tip: be sure to wear rain boots or waterproof shoes, as the grounds can get pretty muddy in between the berries due to the irrigation system.
This out-of-the-ordinary activity made for such a wonderful time for our toddlers! Annie and Finley were free to run & explore while also getting their hands dirty too. What toddler doesn’t love that?!
All Dressed Up for a Day on the Farm
I made sure to dress Annie in her favorite floral Joules rain boots knowing that she would be traipsing in the dirt. And while I probably should have put her in play clothes for the occasion, I opted to put her in this darling smocked eyelet dress from Mini Boden. This dress may look a little too fancy for a field but its lightweight cotton material makes it comfortable for her and easy for me to throw in the wash right after.
Strawberries are hands down Annie’s favorite fruit (& snack for that matter) and it was such a delight to see her pick them off the vine and sample them then & there.
But once she got a taste, all bets were off on her putting any more strawberries in her bucket! They went straight to the mouth lol!
A Bit About What I Wore for Strawberry Picking at Froberg’s Farms:
I dressed for the occasion in a striped cotton maxi skirt, espadrille sneakers and, a ruffle-neck tee. I also can’t resist accessorizing with headbands these days and I love this white velvet Etsy find I recently stumbled upon!
After we filled our buckets full of berries, we grabbed cookies from the bakery and hit the road to head back to Houston. We only spent an hour or so in the fields but the whole experience felt like such an adventure – being so far removed from our normal routine & confines of the city. And now … our fridge is filled with fresh strawberries too!
Have you ever been berry picking before?! This was my first time to pick edible berries straight off the vine to bring home. When I was a kid I loved picking the (probably poisonous) berries off our holly bushes and putting them in backyard mudpies. Turns out berry picking as an adult is just as fun and a whole lot tastier too!
Strawberry picking at Froberg’s will last until late May. They are open daily from 9-5 pm – weather permitting. If you stop by on the weekends, the farm boasts dozens of fun activities kids will love such as duck races and a ride on the “bee coaster.” I’m thinking we’ll have to head back to try that out stat!
