After spending a few months of getting settled into our new home, it was no surprise the travel bug started biting again – big time! Now that we’re in a new state, it feels like there is even more to explore, see and do than ever before! This holiday season, my mom, Annie & I hit the open road to Nashville, Tennessee – for a quick Christmas shopping trip. We went up to peruse Nashville’s quirky one-of-a-kind boutiques and to dine on some delicious Southern cuisine while we were at it.

We stayed in style downtown at Nashville’s historic Union Station Hotel. Housed in the city’s former train station, this upscale historic hotel exudes elegance around every corner. It may be one of “The South’s Best Historic Hotels” but don’t let the word “historic” fool you, the rooms and amenities here are as modern-as-can-be. I’m sharing everything you need to know about this Nashville hotspot & peek into our recent stay here in today’s post below!

The Best Historic Hotel in Nashville: Union Station

The Union Station Hotel lies right in the heart of Downtown Nashville, walkable to countless attractions – including the famous country music halls on Broadway, The Ryman Auditorium, The Country Music Hall of Fame, one-of-a-kind shopping and numerous delicious dining spots too.

Originally built in 1900, the Union Station Hotel’s Gothic-style architecture stands out from the many modern high rises that are springing up right and left in downtown Nashville. This former train station’s clock tower has been a major player in Nashville’s downtown skyline for over a century and even with the influx of modernity and all of its new buildings, it continues to stake its claim – telling Nashvillians the time for many more years to come.

Almost 100 years later, the train station closed and the space was revamped as a Southern Luxury Hotel. The former grand terminal still greets guests today but instead of arriving & departing – they stop and stay here awhile. With it’s 65-ft. barrel-vaulted ceiling, gold-leaf medallions, stained glass windows, and opulent chandeliers – it’s no surprise at all that the Union Station Hotel’s lobby was named as one of the most instagrammable hotel lobbies in the world. I couldn’t resist posting a snap of it “on the gram” myself!

While many pieces of this historic hotel retain the character and charm of the original train station, the guest rooms are revamped and entirely contemporary. We checked into a two queen room several floors up that featured beautiful tall windows, a spacious bathroom, remote control floor-to-ceiling curtains and stylish cow hair headboards.

Annie quickly made herself right at home in this historic Nashville hotel as soon as we walked into our guest room door!

What’s a getaway without room service!?

We only stayed one night in Nashville and opted to have dinner at the Union Station Hotel’s on-site restaurant, Carter’s. Eating dinner steps away from your room makes traveling with a toddler immensely easier! Plus, my mom and I could have a glass of wine or two and just waltz on up to bed after. Now that’s a vacation!

Touting creative Southern cuisine, Carter’s blew us away with their delicious dishes. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and my mom ordered the Osso Bucco. The two of us ended up splitting both dishes because we couldn’t decide which tasted better – they were oh-so-good! Not only was dinner diving, but so was our view! The restaurant is nestled off to the side of Union Station’s immaculate lobby. We opted to have both of our seats face the lobby so we could marvel at the stunning architectural details while we ate – & of course, people watch too.

It was a super quick trip to Nashville, but a memorable one thanks to our stay at The Union Station Hotel. When we weren’t enjoying everything we could fit in here on our one night stay in this historic hotel in Nashville, we spent the rest of our time in the city exploring The Gulch, 12 South, & taking Annie to the American Girl Doll store. After all, she deserved a little shopping of her own too!
