It’s so hard to believe that in less than three months we will have a little BOY joining our family. Sure, I’ve had six months now to mentally prepare – but it still doesn’t feel real. Working on his nursery is one thing that is really starting to make this new reality of ours sink in and I’m having the best time putting together all of the different western nursery pieces in his future room.
A Western Nursery fit for a Little Cowboy
Patrick and I LOVE Western “Cowboy Culture.” We certainly soaked that world in when we lived in Texas, with road trips to western vistas, tickets to yearly rodeo shows, and investing in numerous pairs of cowboy boots & hats over the years. We love being home in Tennessee but parts of our hearts will always belong to Texas. We thought to give our son a “cowboy-themed” bedroom was the perfect nod to this special piece of our hearts. Hopefully, he’ll one day love the wild wild west just as much as we do!
Western Nursery Decor Details & Sources
Paint: We painted our guestroom Island Time by Sherwin Williams this past January – with every intention that this color would be used for either a girl or boy nursery down the road. I would have been happy either way, but I’m obviously so glad we’re having a boy!!
Crib: After having some trouble with Annie’s crib (she was able to easily crawl out before 18 months) we decided to opt for a different model for baby #2. We love this mid-century style crib from West Elm x Pottery Barn Baby. It fits right in with our home’s overall decor!
Dresser: I wanted a mid-century dresser to match the sleek lines of our crib. So I went on a wild goose chase this spring to find the perfect authentic mid-century modern dresser. The hunt involved me calling the owner of an antique shop closed for COVID and convincing him to meet us & let us inside. He happily agreed and we found the perfect quality & authentic mid-century piece for a fraction of what they retail online. It’s not the dresser pictured above, but super similar. At the moment, Patrick is refreshing the dresser in the garage and once it is done I feel like the room will be all tied together!
Glider: We updated Annie’s glider with this stylish and sleek one from CB2. This is another case of trying something with the first baby that didn’t quite meet expectations so we want to redo with the second. Our first glider was great, it got the job done, but we were never quite comfortable. Now that I know how much time I’ll be spending rocking our son back & forth, I knew I wanted to find a super comfortable quality piece to do so in. This glider has amazing reviews and I love that it’s stylish enough to move down to a permanent place in our living room after its stint in the nursery.
Art above the Crib: The art we’ll be hanging above the crib is a print called “Boys of the Land” by Mark Maggiori. Patrick and I both love this artist who specializes in larger than life western vistas. His IG account is pretty cool too! We have another one of his prints above our bar in the living room. We thought this would be the perfect nod to the wild west in our little boy’s nursery.
Gallery Wall: We’re also planning on creating a smaller gallery wall over the dresser using various photos, prints, and a cute little stuffed animal deer bust we had in Annie’s room. My in-laws gave us two precious prints from a Pioneer House Print Shop in Knoxville, TN that are going to fit in perfectly in little boy’s nursery. This Tennessee Stud one is too perfect & I love the colors and bluegrass outdoorsy vibe of this one too.
Crib Sheets: In keeping with the theme, we picked these bison printed crib sheets from Little Unicorn. The colors blend in so well with the room too! We also picked up two matching changing pad covers as well. Knowing what it’s like to be a parent, having multiple changing pad covers is a MUST.
Lamp: This is one thing I haven’t bought just yet but it sits high on my wish list. The Mesa Ceramic Lamp is an Anthropologie find and its ceramic base is just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! In one of the reviews, a buyer said the lamp reminded her of Georgia O’Keeffe’s style of art. Georgia O’Keeffe was known for her modern depictions of the west and naturally, that little mention affirmed my feelings towards this lamp even more!
Curtains: Our velvet curtains are from Amazon and are such great quality for such a low price tag. I’d say they are about 90% blackout, just enough to keep the sun at bay during nap time. We installed them when the room was purely a guestroom but have found they are going to work absolutely perfectly as nursery curtains too!

We certainly still have our work cut out for us when it comes to finishing up the nursery. The dresser still needs to be stained nor do we have a rug yet. And I would LOVE to throw in a rattan day bed somewhere too. Goodness, my wishlist sure is getting long. But knowing that our son won’t really be using the room all too much during the first few months is definitely taking the pressure off things. Phew!

I’m so looking forward to sharing photos of the room with you all when it is all said and done. And as always, thanks for stopping by the blog & following along!
