We’re reaching the point of summer that’s always the hardest for me to bear. The days when triple digits seem to be the norm and not even the swimming pool helps cool me off. Note to self, remember to plan a trip to someplace muuuuch cooler this time next summer! Colorado & New England … I’m talking to y-o-u!
Today I’m styling this darling Tory Burch off-the-shoulder number and sharing a few little tips on how to dress to beat the heat this summer. I’m also giving details on what to look for in clothing and fabrics to keep you even cooler. Of course, all in the most stylish way!
I recently attended our family’s annual outdoor summer party at my uncle’s farm in Mississippi. The heat index on the day of the big event was 103! So so glad I picked this pretty off-the-shoulder floral dress to wear for the occasion. Nordstrom describes this smocked waist dress as a cover-up and I can totally see why. It’s made of 100% cotton and the fabric feels so light and thin. I personally would wear this as a sundress over a cover-up 99% of the time but it would definitely be light enough for a hot day on the beach too.
Shop the Look:
As I’ve mentioned a few times, I’ve been using Rent the Runway Unlimted this summer. So if you’ve noticed a spike in my shopping habits on big ticket “outrageous” items, that’s why. While it would be lovely to drop $400 on this darling dress, I much prefer being able to rent it and return it for something new for drastically less than its price tag. I’ve linked it above both at Rent the Runway and Nordstrom if you’re interested in it for keeps.
Staying Cool + Looking Put Together Even on the Hottest Days
A few things I can’t live without to + tips keep cool out and about in this sweltering here are:
Updos: From crown braids, messy buns, to a simple gibson tuck, updos have been my jam lately when I know I’m going to be outside. Check out my crown braid tutorial here.
Hydrate: This is an obvious one! I’ve always been the one to grab a disposable plastic water bottles from our stash in the pantry when I’m on the go. But Patrick recently bought a Brita and we’re trying to change our ways with reusable water bottles. This stylish one would always make me opt for the Brita as opposed to a quick plastic bottle!
Opt for Cotton or Linen: As I mentioned above, this dress is 100% cotton and I could totally tell the difference between donning this natural fiber as opposed to many of the other fabrics sitting in my closet. Natural fibers such as cotton or linen help air circulate and almost act like a built-in air condition for your body.
Setting Spray: I recently tried Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray and it even kept my make-up intact after the most humid day imaginable. A few spritzes of this spray can keep your make-up looking “just applied” for up to 16 hours.
Lighten up on Accessories: While I love a great pair of statement earrings and a stylish cuff on my wrist, sometimes on a hot summer’s day these items are no bueno. (Not listening to my own advice in the above photos, but that’s okay!) A wrist full of bangles can start sticking to you on a sweaty day. I also know from experience that statement earrings + a long wavy curls don’t really mix well on the most humid of days. When I know I’m going to be outside for longer than usual, I’ll try to wear minimal jewelry, if any to beat the heat.
